Adding a payout method means typing your bank account details into a form on Storefront. This article explains what happens to those details, and what Storefront can see once the account is saved.
What happens when you save the account
The details you type are sent from your browser directly to Stripe, the payment processor Storefront uses to send payouts. Stripe exchanges them for a token — a reference that stands in for the account.
Only that token, and the nickname you choose for the account, are sent on to Storefront. Your account number itself is not part of what Storefront receives.
What Storefront sees afterwards
Once the payout method is saved, what appears under Payout Preferences is the name of your bank and the last four digits of the account. That is enough for you to tell your accounts apart, and it is what Storefront works with when a payout is on its way to you.
Why you are also asked for identity information
Alongside the bank account, you may be asked for details about you or your company — legal name, address, a tax ID, sometimes a photo ID. This is separate from your account number. Stripe is required to run these checks on the people and companies it sends money to, under “Know Your Customer” and similar financial regulations, so they cannot be skipped. Why does Storefront need my personal information? goes through what is asked for and why.
If something does not look right
If you see a payout method on your account that you do not recognise, or you are not sure whether a message asking for your bank details really came from us, do not reply to it — write to support@thestorefront.com.
